Bone Broth
I make a batch and throw it in containers for freezing because I think it’s a staple that should be on hand in all households. Great for cold and flu, great for digestive issues and should be a part of a daily protocol when working to restore gut health.
Bone broth soup is a nutritional powerhouse known for its myriad health benefits. Rich in collagen, gelatin, amino acids, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus, bone broth supports gut health by promoting the growth of beneficial bacteria and repairing the gut lining.
It also aids in joint health, boosts the immune system, promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails, and supports overall well-being. Additionally, the slow simmering process extracts valuable nutrients and compounds from the bones, making bone broth a nourishing and healing addition to any diet.
Here’s the recipe
Beef knuckles or soup bones.
2 tbsp Basil
4 cloves of garlic
4 Bay leaves
2 Onions, large
2 Large Carrots
2 tbsp Rosemary
2 tbsp Sea salt
2 tbsp Apple cider vinegar
2 tbsp Olive oil, extra virgin
5 lbs organic knuckle and marrow bones
.
First brown your bones for more flavor.
Place bones spread out on an oven pan. Brown on one side at 375 then flip to achieve browning on both sides. This improves the flavor and aroma of the broth. The browning step, along with the onions, carrots, garlic and seasonings create the savory aromas.
.
Place a stockpot on the stovetop or use your Instapot on sauté , and sauté’ in olive oil the onions and garlic until caramelized.
Drop the bones in. Add 2 gallons water, acv and seasonings. The bones should be completely covered. Bring to boil. Cover and start simmering.
.
The longer the better 24 hours at a low simmer. Remember, you MUST add water several times over the long simmer period to keep bones fully covered if done on stove top. I set the instapot in 4 hour increments so that I can check it and add water.
You’ll also want to skim off the impurities that rise to the top of the water. This will look like foam floating around on top use a slotted spoon to remove.
.
Pour the broth through a strainer and discard bones and veggies. If you have more than you can consume in 3 days, you can freeze the broth. Otherwise store in jars in fridge for up to three days.
