Marketing of birth control told us we would be free, but it never mentioned we may also be sick.
Women who use birth control for ten years or more are at a 238% higher risk for hypothyroidism. Birth control is advertised as the gateway to reproductive freedom for women, but it’s side effects are rarely considered.
.
Many women have been on birth control for more than a decade and are at a loss for correlating any side effects of the medication. Birth control has become such an acceptable safe method for reproductive control that it’s rarely considered as the culprit for dysfunction in the body. It’s now a go to method for our daughters when any sign of menstrual dysfunction is present.
If you’re experiencing some of the following signals from your body consider that it may be your birth control. Also, consider what we may be setting up our girls for in the future by putting them on birth control from a young age.
Hypothyroidism- BC causes nutrient deficiency. Selenium, Zinc, B2, B12, Folate and Magnesium. All required for healthy thyroid function. BMJ
Hair Loss- Causes hair to move from the grow phase to the resting phase too soon and for too long. Hair growth is controlled by hormones.
Depression- Mood changes can impact relationships and quality of life. Mood is often overlooked or attributed to our circumstances. Maybe there’s more to it?
Anxiety- Mood disorders in women in particular tend to be dismissed as something that we can control with “self care” or “positive thinking”. We are rarely advised that it could be a medication we are taking that is impacting our mood.
Medroxyprogesterone the active ingredient in depo provera has a black box warning. “Progestins with estrogens should be prescribed at the lowest effective doses and for the shortest duration consistent with treatment goals and risks for an individual woman”.

Understanding our bodies and how they are impacted by medications is part of informed consent. It's not to say these medications should not be available to us, but we should aim for better education around birth control and its impact on our whole body health.
Too many women are suffering from side effects from birth control without understanding its impact. They take on the blame and shame of not being strong enough to handle life circumstances or lacking willpower when in reality it may be attributed to medication they’ve become accustom to taking under the assumption that there are no side effects.
A reminder that your body hasn’t turned on you. You are not broken and you don’t need fixing. Your body is amazing and it only aims to inform you of what it needs to thrive.
Take a moment to listen. What might your body be trying to signal? Is your body deficient of birth control? Or could your birth control be causing your body’s deficiency?
